I know I have been talking about Photoshop a lot lately (I mean what can I say I love it), but some of you might not know what it is. Photoshop is a program that allows you to draw and edit images to use for so many things. Photoshop is very helpful for any digital design project because it allows for so many options because you can easily import an image and start working on it. I find myself usually just messing around creating anything I feel like using the shape tools and paintbrush tool. The only thing I find quite annoying about Photoshop is while it is a great program you do have to pay for it. Although you do have to pay for Photoshop, there are many other programs like it. For example GIMP which has many of the same functions as Photoshop and it is completely free. I wish that I had known about programs like GIMP because it would have given me a lot more experience on what we are doing now in class then I had when we started. Overall Photoshop and other programs like it are great tools that everyone should try and experiment with because they can be really fun and very helpful.

So, the quarter is just about to end and I really don't know how to feel about this class so far. These past two or three weeks have been much more enjoyable for me because we are finally using Photoshop which is what I was really looking forward to. While the end of quarter usually means more work, I find with this class all we have is the same amount of work that we usually have with nothing additional. For me this really helps because personally what we are covering at the moment is kind of confusing and I usually need to put more thought into the things I do. Because of this I find myself adding a lot of unnecessary detail to my work that we have been doing in Photoshop and that is not necessarily a good thing. But while there is a "bad" side there is always something positive to take away from this class. Before I decided to take this class, all my friends were telling me that I was going to have a TON of homework and my grades were going to be terrible. But, so far the amount of homework we have is easily manageable and my grades are mostly the same as my other classes. Overall I am glad I decided to do this over anything else because I have found that I have learned so much over just the first quarter and I find this class to be really interesting (especially the Photoshop parts).

The past two weeks have been some of my favorite weeks this year. We have finally started working with Photoshop and design principles. So far I haven't learned that much about design principles as I have worked with different principles in my previous art classes. The principles we focused on were Scale, Emphasis, Repetition, Balance, Movement, and Unity. For our project we had to create 3 submissions for each principle we learned about using Orcs that we downloaded. I found most of it to be pretty easy although some things took longer for me to get down. As for Photoshop I had really never done much with it so it was very new to me. We learned about many tools and we used them to create our submissions for our project.. We used tools like the paintbrush (to paint different things), the magic wand (to select certain places), the shape tool (to create shapes), and the eyedropper (to select different paints we had already used). I now feel like I can create things using Photoshop that I never could before just by using these tools and principles. I have learned how important these principles are because they can help show how things are moving and where you want the viewer to focus on. I have also learned that the slightest change in the balance or size of something can make the picture look completely different and also make some things look out of place. If you want to read more about the design principles and what they are here is a hyperlink to a page that has very good information.

For the past 2 weeks we have been working on creating characters in orthographic view and making comic strips/storyboards. This project was very needed for me because it helped me see what I need to improve on and why story boarding and orthographic characters are so important. The way in which this has really helped me improve is that it has really made me think about trying to become a better artist. I have noticed that my drawings in terms of background images are pretty good but, I really do need to improve on my character design. I need to do this because character design is not the easiest thing for me and I do not think I'm very good at it right now. In terms of the importance of story boarding and orthographic characters. I learned that story boarding is important because it is a big step in the planning phase and mainly helps pitch ideas about your game. The reason it is so good at this is because story boarding is basically a layout of all the scenes in the animation or game and it shows certain design elements in terms of character, background, and movement which really helps show everything about the game. The orthographic drawing is important because one, it can be used in the storyboard and two, it tells the designer the exact measurements of the character and what the character is supposed to look like. Because of this when orthographic characters are drawn it is very important to get all the measurements right and make sure everything lines up on all sides. Together I think orthographic characters and storyboards are some of the biggest parts of game design.
